A lesson I learned many, many years ago was the difference between experiencing a situation, and observing it.

When we experience a situation, especially a stressful or surprising one, we tend to react to it habitually...

This usually leads to a full blown stress response and isn't the way to go if we want to keep a clear head and think of our next move...

Observing the situation is completely different - Think of it as taking a few precious seconds to have a 20,000 foot look down at the situation - We can take emotion out of the event and stay calm and focused...
